Smart metering has been identified by the EU institutions as an important tool for the achievement of Europe’s 20-20-20 targets (and beyond), and the Electricity Directive 2009/72/EC requires that 80% of European consumers be equipped with smart metering systems by 2020 (based on positive cost benefit analyses in the member states).
The status of smart metering across Europe varies greatly, with some countries having fully rolled-out, some in the planning or process phase, and a few having decided that a roll-out is not economically viable.
